The promontory of Portofino has always been considered a unique oasis in the Mediterranean, by virtue of the beauty and richness of the organisms that inhabit it-a fact chiefly attributable to the singular geography and conformation of the area.
A broad strip of land extending several miles out into the open sea which intercepts the currents that cross the Ligurian Sea, creating conditions favourable to the concentration of large amounts of nutritive substances; in addition to this there is the unusual shape of the coastline which, with its marvellous coves and atypical conglomerate rock formations, offers thousands of different species the ideal environment in which to live and reproduce.
It is in these waters that the sport of scuba diving was born, thanks to pioneers who need no introduction, and who did the first sport dives here... some of these trailblazers then devoted themselves to diver education, while others went on to found great companies in the diving industry.
Few places in the Mediterranean can boast such a spectacular concentration of life forms, and to preserve these treasures the area has been designated a marine park, and all activities within it are regulated by the Portofino park authority.
Portofino Divers offers an extensive choice of recreational and technical diving, from the Portofino National Marine Reserve all the way to Genoa ( western Ligurian coast ) and to Cinque Terre ( eastern Ligurian coast ); we make a clear distinction between these activities by classifying the dive sites into two categories.
The dives inside the protected marine area take place at designated sites established by the Portofino park authority; to these, we add the value of our extensive knowledge of the area, in order to take you on alternative and less frequented itineraries, that offer up a wealth of surprises.
The other dives are primarily wrecks, sunk during the first and second world wars, distributed along the Gulf of Genoa, the Gulf of Tigullio and the eastern coast of Liguria as far as Cinque Terre. Warships, steamboats, merchant ships and naval tugs... which always offer up the thrill of some new discovery to every wreck divers.
To introduce you to the wonders and secrets of our sea, we have attempted to briefly describe the various marine habitats, and the flora and fauna that characterise the different dive sites.
